[urq] California Vehicle Registration LawAndrew afinn1 at gmail.comFri Aug 29 07:51:30 PDT 2008
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> It sounds as though you brought the car into the state ... correct? Funny, for some reason I thought that you bought your car from someone in California. You have to be very careful ... I'm pretty sure that California law requires that you need to notify the DMV within 10 days of bringing a car into the state. Make sure you fully understand the rules before doing anything official at the DMV. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Trust me, they will hit you with a penalty for every day you did not notify them of the car in the state. As Steve says, you have 10 days to notify them...then the penalty starts. They'll get that info from the bill of sale. As for modified cars, I'll know more after the V8 project is 100% complete. You don't take it to a smog shop, as Steve states, you take it to a smog referee, who goes over the car and makes sure you took ALL of the original car's emission controls with you when you swapped. Then they register the car as the model year of the engine. 2Bennett has taken a great deal of care to get the V8 conversion right from a smog standpoint. For example the '98 A8s have a connection to the fuel filler door with a pump that samples the air in the fuel filler neck. '97s do not have this. So a '97 motor is most desireable. Do your research before you swap a motor in California. Andrew Finney 1985 UrQ V8.
