[urq] Collector Car InsuranceBrandon Rogers brogers at terrix.comMon Sep 8 09:51:44 PDT 2008
A little feedback for everybody. I just called Haggerty. It told them my car (nice 1984 w/ 20V) was worth $20,000. I told them I use it for pleasure - run errands, drive to work every once in a while (I actually prolly drive it to work ~50-60 times/per year (so quite a bit), pleasure drives with friends, GTGs, and to the trails for mountain biking. Garaged. 4000-5000 miles/yr. Both wife and I have daily drivers. She said my premium would be $367/yr - but they don't like how I use the car and likely would not insure it. They had no problem with driving to work occasionally - it was the other stuff - errands and putting a bike on it. They are looking for cars that are treated in a more collector-car way. His reply was something like, "they want to see you have another car to use as a daily driver that is insured by a different carrier." The "usage" is written as pleasure use, events, parades, etc. In other words pretty much anything except daily driver. Occasional use for commuting and/or errands is pretty much a given with "pleasure use" provided you can show you have another vehicle and policy in force to take on the majority of risk. At least that is how I understand it. They can't deny coverage in the scenario you presented, but it is possible they might not renew the policy. Then again, how would they ever know where you were driving to and from anyway? Much more ambiguous than an odometer reading I think. Does that mean that you cannot drive your car to work occasionally? I.e. does this mean if I decided to drive the urq to work on a nice fall day and got in a fender bender I'm not covered? What if you dive it to the office and then run some personal errands... Thanks for any more info. There was a mileage limitation, but they did not have a problem with doing stated value coverage on an '83 Ur-Q. The premium was around $195. A year ago my insurance agent changed over all their JC Taylor customers to Haggerty. Because it was a global switch by the agency, Haggerty had no problem with the same terms for around the same $ for the first year. The biggest difference between the two I noticed right away is Haggerty has no mileage limitation, just "usage" (meaning it can not be a commuter car). The big surprise was upon renewal, the premium plummeted to around $130 a year!
