[urq] Bringing her home!Brandon Rogers brogers at terrix.comWed Apr 15 08:46:06 PDT 2009
Here are my thoughts 1. Fan switch- Just replaced mine - got it cheap at Import Car parts. I'm not a whiz on ETKA but I'm coming up with 191 959 481C for the 3 pin and 893 959 481 for 2 pin . Not sure what you have... 2. Gauges can open up a whole can o worms. I really like having the in-dash water temp gauge - as it very convenient and the stock boost gauge is useless. But then you have to move the boost gauge (if you want to still have one). I like the Ben Howell boost gauge mod - mounted at side mirror. You should be able to install the in-days temp gauge and just move a wire/connector or something on the Inst Cluster so the signal goes the gauge and not the idiot light IIRC - it's been a while.... For oil temp ideally you want to get a sender from a CGT - it screws into the oil pump on the front of the motor. For gauges I like the factory 3-gauge panel from a CGT - but again then you have to move the diff lock panel... I might have the gauges you could use on a panel - will have to check.... I don't think I would do all this just for the drive to MT - figure out what gauges you want and take your time. Highway driving doesn't stress the cooling system so I'd be surprised if you have any issues assuming your water pump is good and you don't have any major leaks. 3. I was going to suggest an older Alpine - but I think they are all green if that really matters. I bought a new lower end Alpine headunit a year ago so I could hook up my ipod - pretty ugly IMO....apparently my older Alpine had no ipod capability (so they told me - maybe I was had who know - it was 10 yrs old) - oh well... 4. Might be nice to see if the cruise works - if it is still there. Good lighting is important IMO - headlights and tail/brake lights. Hey Guys, I'm finally able to bring my '83 ur up to Montana from Colorado after 2 1/2 years and I'm pretty excited about it. There are a few things that I should probably take care of before the trip in a few weeks, though, hence this post. Please bear with me..... 1. The Radiator Fan used to be on all the time, due to a defective fan switch. Ben Howell graciously wired in a toggle switch for the time being so the fan could be turned off during highway cruising. I'd like to fix the problem once and for all, so I guess I'm looking at a new Fan Switch. Any part #'s or BTDT much appreciated. 2. My car has no coolant temp or oil temp gauges, just the idiot light (which may or may not work.) How difficult is it to put one or the other in? What gauges (type/brand, etc) should I be looking for, and where would I tap into to install the sensor? I'm looking for a "get me home to Montana" solution, then I can pretty it up and put them where I'd like for good once I'm home. 3. My car has the original radio/cassette, which sometimes works, sometimes does not. I'd like to replace it for the 1,000 mile ride home with a basic CD player that would still look decent in a 26 year old car. Anyone know of a particular brand or model that they'd recommend? I don't care for the bright lights and techno gizmos that every new car audio deck has these days......looking for an older style Alpine head unit type of thing. A red/amber backlight would be ideal. I'll deal with the speaker end of things when I get it home. 4. Besides the new battery and an oil change, anything else I should take a look at before the trip? The car has been in an unheated garage for the last 2 1/2 years, and was last driven to the Ur25 celebration last August by Ben Howell, who seemed to think it ran well (except for the dying battery!) I know the tires will probably have some flat-spotting for awhile, but that seemed to go away after awhile when Ben drove it last. My AAA Plus membership is current. Thanks all......looking forward to having my baby back!
