I think it is the 2nd idea. Wires sorted out. I checked fluid levels of the hydraulic oil and brake fluid level. Sounds like you have a low fluid condition in either in the hydraulic assist system (for power steering and brake booster/bomb) or low brake fluid level at the brake master reservoir. Check levels and / or broken wires to the sending units if levels check out. If I am mistaken, then I suppose you could have the brake pad indicator shorted out (via grounding) and that connection has broken/ corroded during the winter months. I would check again to make sure you know what that symbol refers to in your book. I was under the impression that the pad indicator warning was different in your car.
