Increasing oil consumption long before the drain interval, no sticking
chokes or anything like that diluting the oil with fuel, so I have to assume
the anti-friction properties were not as anti-friction as they were once. I
guess the longer chain hydrocarbons start to go south along with the
additive package viscosity improvers. The oil was clean yet, but smelled
slightly cooked/burned. Engine would do well with an oil cooler installed,
plan is to install a diesel oil cooler this winter when I catch up, but it
isn't looking like that's happening anytime soon either.
I tried the 10-40 on a whim- and the drain interval was reached with no
consumption at all. I found this once, long ago when Shell sold an oil
called Extrema. It was aimed at the racing scene more so, but I used it on
high perf aircooleds, and it was very good.
