There is one on Ebay (diesel starter) right now.  Search "VW diesel" on
the Bay and you will see it.  Rebuilt, never used- so they say!

  And skeptical you should be.  I'm not sure on the gear reduction
starters 
they started using in 85, but the earlier starters are something like
1/5hp 
vs 2 hp for the diesel!
  I show about $90 for a rebuild and about $90 more for new. (plus core,

shipping,
etc.)
