www.ross-tech.com sells VAG-COM, the diagnostic software for VW's. You just plug in a cable into your dash like all other OBD-2 cars and read the codes. The TDI is a dream compared to the older diesels. Notice I have one of each so I have experience in both areas. The TDI is much quieter and more powerful. With 90hp and 155fts you'll swear your driving a gasser. (The new 2004 TDI PD is a whole different animal. If you still want some simplicity in the TDI, stick to 1996 to 2003 models).
