Well, if it were an air leak, it would be a problem when it was warm as well,
and when the outside temp is over 45F (or when it's plugged in), it starts
almost instantly. And runs great. However, these engines are pretty weird and
complicated. For instance, after starting, the engine only will run at an idle
for a few minutes -- you can put the pedal to the floor, makes no difference --
and that's the way it's supposed to be. Also, the injectors are operated by a
hydraulic system that uses the engine oil to compress the fuel and blow it out
yeah, I know, ether is bad, but it's a good test tool. It could be the long
turbo/intercooler path however makes it nearly impossible to get the ether in
there before it all evaporates away.
Major PITA having a diesel with so much electronic crap. Totally destroys the
reliablility factor that diesels have always been reknowned for.
