[Vwdiesel] Transmission Gearing with TD and TD options

If you spend a lot of time near 75 mph, even the TD might be
noisy with the shorter 5th gear.

It's bad enough doing 3K @ 60mh with the highest ratio transmission
they put out in the latter years, which is the 3.94/.75 combination
Even the TDI is under geared it seems. At 60mph it's above the peak
torque of the engine in rpm. A little smaller turbo and some taller gears
and the early diesels SHOULD perform well (better) and make as good or
better mileage. Never understood why they went for such high rpm. Then
to set the TD's up a couple hundred rpm higher than an FF tranny even.
At 55, which is what most of them were set up for, it's still about 28000
rpm, which isn't really an efficient rpm to be running even a "high speed"
Loren (wishing for nearly unlimited resources so he could find the
time to play with turbo sizing and other projects.) :)
