[Vwdiesel] Ticking sound under acceleration?

Now that my t-belt whine is gone, I am hearing a faint ticking sounding 
under acceleration, sounds like valve train or injection pump noise. The 
last thing I did was check the cam timing (it was fine) and advanced the 
pump timing by ear. I didn't advance it all that far, and suspect it could 
still go a bit further, judging by the still slightly rough starts when cold.

What are the signs of advancing timing too far?
