[Vwdiesel] Camshafts ---- ( missing key mystery )H.Hagar h_hagar at prcn.orgThu Mar 4 18:23:33 EST 2004
I had to look deep in my Teacup for this one. The camshaft sprocket slip problem. Here it is , its coming in clear now . Mark Shepherd was so paranoid he took to over-tightening the bolt. Val Christian said he had one slip that was installed at the factory. (was some of them a result of turning engine with socket ?) I said I was flabbergasted having rubbed elbows with Germans for many years , let me tell you they pin even radio knobs. The cams I have here does indeed have a slot for a woodruf key. But the sprockets have no slot.SO it is important to make sure the sprocket does not slip. How to tell ? did it slip ? next time. Make a timing mark under washer . Piece of cake with an electric marker. From now on all mine will be marked. 33 foot pounds according to my Bentley, on bolt.Sounds reasonable to me looking at taper. Did I use the bolt for turning engine ? yes but I could see keycut in shaft so I figured it was keyed. I tried to call VW on my dial phone , but they did not answer. Hagar.
