Anyone ever experiment with running with timing more advanced on their TD? 

Yes I have been doing exactly that for about two years now.

Retired so if I feel like playing all day , that's what I do.  1984 Turbo 1.6L Rabbit
5 speed manual   255 000 km on clock.  I have changed Injector pressure and
timing and fuel regulator setting  etc  many many different settings. Many different
fuels.  Sort of non mechanic's euphoria.   And by the way I grew up with REAL 
injection pumps.  Inline where the stroke was variable.
In your case its a piece of cake .Make a really thin scribe mark on pump , and 
advance pump say a pencil line each time ,  keep going several times till engine
starts to protest.As a mechanic the best point is easy to find for you without hurting
engine.If you want to know anything about VE pumps look in archives , and find
there links to many good sites. If I can find I shall post here for you.

Roger Brown , Scott Kair , Sandy Cameron  and many others have links to internal
drawings spec,s etc.
Before signing off maybe I should mention that the internal vane pump vanes wear
very fast on some pumps.And there goes the economy and power and comes the smoke.
