[Vwdiesel] Rabbit droppings # 50.---- ( nifty way to tell if cold start works )H.Hagar h_hagar at prcn.orgFri Mar 19 12:08:26 EST 2004
Why would it not work ? well spline in cam arm -- cable clamp may have slipped. You could have forgotten to tighten screw on clamp. Here is how I do it : Pull the knob all the way out -- engine off. Notice amount of pull. Then start engine and notice the force needed to pull lever all the way out. If there is considerable difference all is well. If there is little or no difference it is time to investigate. Remember there are small splines in cold start lever so it can be adjusted. In full warm (forward knob) the cam should be just starting to hit piston. It is a very strong returnspring (coil) that returns timing ring to retarded position. That's why it takes a lot of pull on cable to move it. By the way it is fairly simple to calculate timing degrees versus PSI in pumphousing. Piston is about 1 " diameter and pressure in pump 100 psi. If you are interested in particulars of spring --just pipe up and I shall post it . Or you can find it in archives. Hagar. PS: is nifty anything like cool ?
