On synchronizing of generators  I forgot to mention starting the alternator as a motor.
A synchronous motor .  Simple to do.  Then engaging a clutch to VW diesel.

To start alternator I would use a dc motor for spinning it up. A soft starter would do
but then again it is money.

If spun up to a bit above sync   close breaker and she will fall in step like
right now. That will speed up grand Coulee a bit but they won't complain.

Yes Virginia there are as many solutions as there are problems.
