   Uh, no, it is not fiction. The Gulf Stream has already lost 20% (in just the
last 50 years, IIRC) of it's power, and continues declining, with the rate of
decline increasing rapidly. The last time this happened, according to
paleontologists, England went from warmer than it is now to covered with a mile
thick layer of ice in 75 years. The Pentagon report is their scenario about what
will happen to human society in such a case, but the science underlaying their
concerns is extremely real.
   I've been reading about the Gulf Stream dying for some time, but it wasn't
until just recently that more study pointed to the evidence that this quite
likely will happen very rapidly, not 200 or more years down the road as thought
before. Which is why the Pentagon got interested, and may well be what decided
them to invade Iraq. 
   I hope I'm still around to see it -- the covering of the US and Europe, the
major polluters, with a sheet of ice has got to be the greatest cosmic joke of
all time.
