I think I've done it...
'H' you posting of tuning by ear is interesting...
I think it is totally safe if you do 2 things...
1) Lock cam ..no bar? then a possibly better job is to use a steel rule ans a bunch of feeler gauges to get a really snug fit.
2) Ensure crank was also set to TDC.
3) ..OK i cant count ;o)... final adjustment of pump (dynamically for the last few deg) should be done with eyes closed for that extra sensitivity :oD...Happy? turn off engine and release tension in fuel lines...
4)If you cannot do 1) & 2); then lower hood and leave engine alone :o)
