[Vwdiesel] hillbillies: clatter = too advanced??

hey all
I started my EV diesel up cold this morning
w/ cold advance OUT she was clattering more than when I pushed 'er in
w/ cold advance IN she was running smoother/quieter
does this mean my pump is too far advanced?
(still looking forward to the hillbilly tuning how-to)
