[Vwdiesel] hot starting problems

The Caddy (Diesel) starts great when it is cold. The glow plugs cycle 
and the engine starts before it turns all the way over. However, on hot 
starts, the glow plugs don't cycle. After about two turns, the starter 
starts slowing down and sometimes I get lucky and it starts and 
sometimes I just end up with not enough power to turn the engine fast 
enough to start.
When I put the battery on the charger, it comes down to minimum charge 
within an hour.
Is this telling me that I have bad grounds or that it time for an Optima 
upgrade?
