[Vwdiesel] Air Filter

In my TD conversion I ran a 3" ABS tube through the firewall and placed the 
air cleaner above and to the driver's side of the tranny.  Previously I have 
used a modified diesel vanagon airbox.  The filter is a bit of a pain to change. 
 While at a local FLAPS I perused the air filters.  I found one that is a 
nice long cylinder with a pleated filter.  The rubber end fits perfectly over 3" 
ABS.  Is there any reason I should put the whole thing in a canister?
