[Vwdiesel] fitting aftermarket TACH on A2 diesel

86 Golf 1.6L diesel.
How do  I fit an external tach (for a gas engine...).
I know (or thought I knew) I had saved the emails on fitting  a tach to a
diesel but now I can't find them. (maybe
they are on my home computer...?)

I know I have to take the signal from the W terminal on my alternator, but
do I need to fit some kind of external circuit
to that, or go straight to the tach.
