[Vwdiesel] Smoke rings from tail pipe?

I thought I was dreaming, but when I first started up Bondo Golfy y'day I
looked in the rear view mirror to see if much less smoke was being blown
right at startup, now that I have all 4 GP's glowing.  I did a double take,
but I kid you not, I saw no less than probably 8 or 10 smoke rings
intermittently.  You know....the rings you used to blow when you were a kid,
first learning to smoke cigarettes.  Engine was chugging and hunting a
little bit, as it always does during the first minute after startup.  Still
quite smokey, but not quite as much, nor for quite as long, as when I got
the last GP working.

Anyone else ever had smoke rings?

Muffler is new and from a Golf...possibly early 90's Golf.   Friend at work
had it as NOS and gave it to me.
