[Vwdiesel] large abrasive sheetsJames Hansen jhsg at sasktel.netTue Feb 8 01:36:02 EST 2005
No, just leave a small gap between sheets rather than try to get them so close they overlap and leave a high spot. Technique when lapping prevents the gap from being a factor.(large circular movements, with plenty of extra room to move the part around so no one spot is ever over the small gap) Works well when used with large dosage of patience. Use plenty of water to float away cuttings which keeps the abrasive sharp and cutting well. A good 3m spray adhesive is waterproof... but be sure to get even coat applied or it causes un-eveness in the paper as well. I've never been able to find large sheets of fine wet sanding paper. Large sheets of coarse are easily found, but no 4-600 grit wet that I can find, at least here. Expect some difficulty when you have a head surface to do that has the hard inserts present- the aluminum is much softer, and the head will tend to cut away and leave a high spot around the precup inserts if you have much material to remove.- the inserts are all in a line- the head would rock along that line a tad if you aren't careful to not let that happen. It's doable, but tedious. No replacement for a good machine shop really, but hey I kew a guy that flat filed a head that had a bad warp (.020") with a common mill bastard file... and got away with it. For me, that would have blown the expansion tank across the shop first time the motor ran. -James -----Original Message----- From: vwdiesel-bounces at vwfans.com [mailto:vwdiesel-bounces at vwfans.com]On Behalf Of Libbybapa at wmconnect.com Sent: Monday, February 07, 2005 11:09 PM To: val at swamps.roc.ny.us; vwdiesel at vwfans.com Subject: Re: [Vwdiesel] large abrasive sheets I thought about doing that. Do the seams cause any trouble?
