[Vwdiesel] rabbits availableShalyn Shourds sshourds at flash.netWed Feb 9 21:46:45 EST 2005
I have, for the past several years, been storing a couple of Rabbit Diesels in a barn in Southern Indiana. Last time I called my grandfather, who still lives on that farm, someone had been going through and stealing everything in that barn. Assuming that they haven't gotten to the Rabbits yet (they did steal an anvil), I probably ought to offer them to the list. I'm not realistically going to use them and would rather someone on list get some use out of them instead of some meth addict stealing metal for drugs. In storage since 1994: 1978 4 door Wolfburg Rabbit with a later 1.6 engine. I believe its injection pump is here in Texas, but that could probably be located and included. I'll have to see. It was driven to where it's parked, but that was a long time ago. The engine used a quart every 350 miles, but it started religiously and probably just had valve stem leaks. Body survived a few Chicago winters and so will have some rust but no holes as I recall and no dents of note. Tranny was pretty rough--synchros were gone, though it was still drivable. In storage since about 1997: 1980 2 door 1.5L Westmoreland Rabbit upgraded to a 5 speed FF transmission. My first car, and I think I only kept it for vague sentimental reasons. Again, the classic "running when parked". Ran well, though it had had the usual wiring issues after a windshield leak ate the fuse block. Now that I'm older and smarter, I could fix it back fairly quickly, but at the time.... No significant body damage though both of the jack points were soft enough to deform when I tried to use them to lift the car. It should still have all the parts on it, though it's hard to say if any have been stolen. It's been a long time since I gave either car a hard look so I can't guarantee conditions. I should be able to come up with titles for both. The closest city of consequence is Owensboro, KY. The cars are on the Indiana side a few miles. If you want, contact me for more details and we can negotiate prices, arrangments, etc. I will not be able to provide parts, sorry. I'm a thousand miles away so all I can provide is someone to escort you around the place which is very important these days. My brother-in-law went up there alone one time and my uncle came running out of the barn with a cocked flintlock. Theft can make you paranoid. I'm about to join him pretty soon, though I'll probably have my caplock :) -Shalyn
