I have an AAZ in a 94 jetta, and the manual for it.
I believe (but check with others) that the only difference between the AAZ
pump and the earlier 1.6L pump is the electrical timing retarder device. 
I will look at the manual and see what operates it.

I believe it retards injection when coasting or under light loading
