Jon, are you the guy that has two of these Overland 1.9NA with 1.6hydralic head? I do not think so. I have the same motor. This is Sounding very similar to my issues. I would NOT run the motor that far advanced, I am pretty sure that is what caused mine to fail. I feel mine was running way to far advanced for about 500 miles before it blew, shatering the #1 exhast lifter and cracking #2 exhast lifter. The motor still would run after this happend, but only on 3 cylinders of course. #1 valve broke the keeper as well, but did not get bent. I feel that last guy that I paid to set the timing did it wrong. He said, man, this motor was WAY retarded, so he upped it about .15 It sounded louder but I figured he knew what he was doing any my hot start issue was gone (I had an issue where when cold, the motor would turn right over, as soon as I had no glow, it would take 7 or so revolations) Cold start level did not help much. Do the timing yourself but tripple check things. Back it down to 1.00 and if you have the same starting issue as me, put it up to 1.05 I guess you have a modified 1.6 timing belt cover, I never cut mine and just ran without the cover, no issues for the 15K the motor ran for before bang.
