I think I'd still be pretty surprised if that would
fit correctly and be able to close the engine cover.  

The engine cover sits very, very close to the engine
on a type 3.  That's why VW had to totally redesign
everything around the longblock so it could sit flat. 
I think there is quite a bit less clearance on a T3
than a V'gon

Kurt, I'd be interested to know if you've been able to
do measurements on the car and the engine.
