Been there. I had a car (bought new) which was the same...no timing mark. I ended up marking it with a cold chisel. I pulled #1 injector, and fed a section of 14 ga copper wire in, and rotated the engine until #1 was at TDC, and then checked for the "pin" alignment on the IP (to make sure that I was not 180 off). That flywheel never had any timing mark on it. It did have a tab, which I presume is for a sensor in some application...but not mine. It was a 1980, 1.5, I believe. This may not be what you want to hear...just my experience. I have not had a VW since then, or before then missing a timing mark. > > I have a Bentley manual for reference. > but I can't find the flywheel TDC mark on the my 1.6L through the 'screw' > cover . > > This was running engine when I drove it into the garage. > I resealed the IP and put it back on started it up, ran and idled fine. > > Finally got my dial indicator in and was going to fine tune the setting. > 'pinned' the pump and camshaft and looked in the plug hole nothing there. > I figured since it ran fine the mark would have to be 'right there' > > Popped the camshaft gear loose, turned the engine (after removing the IP > pin) at least 45 degrees each > direction and looked for the 'mark' on the flywheel as pictured in the > bentley. > > NOTHING !?!?! > Is there a chance that it is not marked??? > Is there some other method? > > Thanks, > Brian > _______________________________________________ > Vwdiesel mailing list > Vwdiesel at vwfans.com > http://www.audifans.com/mailman/listinfo/vwdiesel >
