Umm, duh (on my part) the low compression is likely from (drum roll)
the blown head gasket! Oye!
Oily injectors doesn't necessarily mean anything. I've seen them
where the heat shield wasn't sealing well so oil (or soot and diesel)
was able to work past it and puddle up. Sometimes I may have been
from excess oil in the cylinder and other times it's a bad injector,
putting too much/too coars a spray, of fuel into the cylinder. Best
thing is to check those injectors, install with new or re-puckered
heat shields, run a while then check again.
If #4 is where the head gasket's blown then it's possible it's pulling
a little oil through from the oil passage (around a head bolt between 3
and 4) and that was giving you your runaway symptoms.
It's not uncommon for people to run gas rated (S) oil in a diesel
and thus carbon the inside up, including the breather screen in the
valve cover, which would give you excess crank pressure. It'll
even sometimes happen with the dual breather setup tying into the
side of the block, especially if the engine has a little excess blowby,
which the wrong oil can certainly cause from excessive coking on the
