I'll 2nd that about not trusting a temp gauge - I've never overheated my TDI
but on my old Mitsu Galant VR4, I discovered that the radiator fan had gone
TU when I went to see the Kingdome implosion.
While sitting in the massive traffic jam afterward, my temp read a little
higher than normal but nowhere near 'red'. I assumed it was due to the
prolonged idling until the pressure cap opened and it started to puke
coolant from the overflow tube!
However in your case Bill, since you burst a hose it's likely that the temp
sensor was no longer immersed in coolant, so therefore unable to read it's
Unfortunately, the TDI gauge is 'rigged' so it reads straight-up from about
150F to 210 or so, so we don't get to see the minor fluctuations and would
have less warning if something really did go wrong.
