If you lose coolant and don't happen to see the gauge going up for the couple of minutes the temps are able to register, then the temp drops back dow as it conducts heat ONLY from the hot surroundings since there's not scalding coolant flowing past it as your engine cooks. I'd sat an oil temp gauge would be a good second gauge rather than a redundant coolant temp gauge for that specific reason. YMMV Loren
