I've seen something similar happen once. It was from a LOT of carbon
buildup in the exhaust. With a proper running engine a LOT more air and
higher rpm blowing through the exhaust, it was clearing a lot of crud and
some of it was "embers." If the muffler broke then it would be rattling
around and knocking out crud.
