What is H3,H4, etc

Dear Q-list members,
     I hear a lot about euro headlights and H3, H4, etc. designations 
for them. What do all of these mean. The headlights on my 98 A4 2.8Q say 
H7. Can anyone tell me what all of this means and why euro versions are 
said to be better.
