Not just 'mericans.  BMW currently has a television ad series running
over here.  It starts with a picture of someone wobbling on a unicycle,
and the soto voce voiceover says:

   "When the wheels that steer also drive, the result can be instability.
    That's why, on every BMW, the front wheels steer and the back wheels
    drive."

Nurg.  My version:

   "On every BMW, the front wheels steer and the back wheels leap
    sideways when it's wet."
