Checking the Turbo and Wastegate

A short overboost peak lasting 1 to 2 seconds will be observed and should be ignored. The boost pressure should be measured at a steady state around 90 kph.

• Close the VAG 1397 valve at 90 kph (56 mph)

• If the nominal values are achieved, continue diagnosis in the K-Jetronic and ignition system and/or the diagnostic code system - see page 28-73.
• If the nominal values are not achieved, check the operation of the wastegate frequency valve as per 28-98 or try replacing the valve. If this fails, try replacing the wastegate
• If all of the above measures fail, replace the turbo.
