Bearing noise, shift linkage.

The noise you ask of sounds very much like the driveshaft center support
(carrier) bearing.
I just went through that with my QSW (Passat Syncro)
Your thoughts on the shifting seem correct too.
Good call asking on this list since the syncro is really about the same as
the 4000q (80q typ85)
