Shedding a little more light on this...

It seems that the M/C that's in my car is (the old, bad one) is the one
specified for the Avant. The reman. unit I got from Advance is the one for
the Sedan according to Scott Mockry's parts catalog at
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com. If you click on his parts catalog and view
the two master cylinders specified for '87, the reman. I just got is the
"except wagon" version:

"169mm long, from flange to front end. aluminum type. 23.81mm cyl. 19/17mm
Dia. reservoir holes"

The one that's on the car right now, inexplicably, is the Avant unit:

"169mm long, from flange to front end, cast iron type. 25.40mm cyl. 18/18mm
Dia. reservoir holes"

Huh. How's that for a corker? At some point in the past, either Audi had a
production change that nobody mentioned, a few of the Avant MCs slipped onto
the Sedans, or else this car had a MC replacement already and someone used
the Avant unit. All things are possible in the Twilight Zone. ;)

I guess the Avant unit, with its slightly larger cylinder and pistons, will
reduce the pedal travel and give you a little more leverage.

Either way, for $58 I'm not disappointed. This is not a race car, it's a
daily driver.
