  You have to remove the turbo to pull the exhaust manifold.  You 
can't get to the middle bolts otherwise.  :-(  I usually pull the heads 
with turbo and manifolds attached.
  I don't remember for sure but I'll bet the TDC hole is about 2 clock 
positions to the driver's side of the top of the tranny, like on the 
5 cylinder Audi's.  All your timing tools will work just fine.  All the 
1.5 and 1.6's use the same tools other than for the head bolts.
  For your blinking water gauge, try pulling the probe out of the 
reservoir and cleaning it very well with a solvent.  Usually it's a lack 
of continuity between the two legs of the probe that cause the 
blinking.  Same as low coolant as far as the resistance is concerned.
