Just a wild stab in the dark, but might a worn transmission mount cause
the clunk? In fact, being closer to the exhaust downpipe, isn't the
right mount more likely to disintegrate, causing what might appear to be
a right front clunbking noise?
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.
