strikers of the same design, the captive nut (actually a thick metal plate
with a threaded hole) is held within a metal cage that is spot welded to the
inside of the B pillar.
BUT (very big but) usually there is evidence of the welds visible on the
surface of the pillar near the striker - (sometimes they are easy to see,
othertimes a powerful light shining across the surface will reveal them) and
I have just taken a look at the driver's B pillar on my car and there's no
sign of them. This, linked to our knowledge of Audi's masterpieces of design
makes me suspect that the nut might just end up in the sill....
I have just checked my Haynes from what it says I would think that the
fitting is somewhat firmly captive as the phase "tap with a hammer" is used
in the striker adjustment section. Bentley has some drawings of the striker
removed and the female thread visible.
To be sure, I would try removing the interior trim from the pillar, there is
usually at least one hole behind the trim, there must be access to the boot
release on the driver's side after all.
The collars are knackered on my car too - can you get just the collar or do
you really have to replace the whole thing? Maybe the collar could be slid
over the striker and then shrunk in place? (Wishful thinking).
