Oil Confusion

I hop in the 80 today and start her up.  The clicking from the engine is
much louder than usual, so I pop the hood.  I lift up the dipstick with
the engine on and the clicking magically dissapears except for a faint
noise as before.  I noticed some oil way high up on the dipstick as well,
too much oil, getting splashed around maybe?  But why would the noise go
away when I lifted up the dipstick?  BTW first start off the day, so all
the oil was in the pan.
