96 A6Q wagon tranny problems

I have a 96 A6Q wagon that won't move.   My wife was at a stop light, and
when the light turned green she pressed the gas and the transmission made a
clunk sound and the car didn't move.   She has tried all gears including
reverse and the car does not respond.    Engine and everything else runs
fine.   There is just some disconnect at the tranny.   We have the car
pushed into a parking lot waiting to be towed.   Any ideas?
