4000q sensor on cam cover

Dear Quattrophiles-

Two quick questions regarding the I-5 on my 86 4kcsq:

1) What is the sensor that bolts to the cam cover on the
passenger's rear side of the cover.  It attaches on top of the cover using
the bolts coming out of the head for attachment.  It looks like a temp
sensor to me, but for what?

2) What is the electrical connector in the rear of the head for?  The one
I am referring to snaps on to a sensor in the head of the I-5.  What is
that sensor?

My Bentley manual reveals no answers to these questions.
