ABS Clunks

I recently purchased a 1987 5000CS Turbo Quattro Wagon which is great 
fun. I notice that when the ABS kicks in, it almost sounds like someone 
is down under the car hitting something with a hammer (well, not quite 
that bad but certainly you know it's happening!). It almost sounds like 
metal-to-metal contact. I was told that this was normal. Seems unususal 
for such an otherwise elegantly designed vehicle.

Any thoughts or experience?
